Changes
to UL 971 Underground Piping Standards
Last
Summer PEI's performance requirements went into effect for the
"New UL 971" piping standards for nonmetalic underground piping for flammable
liquids.
These new requirements cover primary carrier and
secondary containment nonmetallic pipe and fittings (piping)
intended for use underground in the distribution of
petroleum-base flammable and combustible liquids, alcohols, and
alcohol-blended fuels.
The scope of UL 971 was revised to clearly indicate that piping
systems evaluated to the standard are intended only for
underground applications. Excluded were uses in sump, above
ground and marine applications. Separate requirements are
currently being developed for the excluded applications.

PEI
has surveyed the UST State Program Managers to see how their
state intends to handle "new" and "old" UL 971 listed pipe. We
asked each state:
Will your state allow piping
listed to the 1995 standard to be installed after the new UL 971
requirements become effective (July 1, 2005)?
