Core Engineered Solutions Helps Bring Clean Air To The Great Smoky Mountains. New Alternative Fuel (B-50 Biodiesel) Dispensing Station to Serve Park Service Fleet
Waynesville, N.C. – In an initiative to improve air
quality within Great Smoky Mountain National Park and
surrounding areas the Park recently employed Core
Engineered Solutions to supply a new B-50 Biodiesel fuel
dispensing system for use by the Parks vehicle fleet.
This installation reflects a growing national trend towards the use of alternative fuels and other renewable sources of energy highlighted by the establishment of the nation's first comprehensive Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program by the EPA. The RFS program provides incentives to promote the use of fuels such as ethanol and Biodiesel and could reduce petroleum use by up to 3.9 billion gallons by 2012.
Biodiesel is a diesel replacement or additive made from vegetable oils and animal fats. It's renewable, non-toxic, biodegradable, and can be produced by American farmers. It comes from two primary and plentiful sources: soybean oil and yellow grease from restaurants. It can be blended with petroleum diesel fuels or used as pure biodiesel. In this case the Park chose a B-50 blend (50% Biodiesel / 50% Petroleum).
The Biodiesel fueling station, which will service a fleet of over 20 vehicles, is being made possible by a grant from the Clean Fuel Advanced Technology (CFAT) Project, as well as additional funding from the Friends of the Smokies. The fuel tank is coated in a low maintenance concrete exterior which requires less maintenance than tradition steel tanks. “This refueling system will not only save the Park money through lower maintenance costs but will subsequently help them reach their stated goal of improved air quality.” said Core Engineered Solutions Vice President of Operations, Jeanne Murck.
Core Engineered Solutions provided the Biodiesel dispensing system which included a 4,000 Gallon ConVault™ Aboveground Storage tank. ConVault storage tanks are compatible with most alternative fuels and feature an innovative concrete encased design. Six inches of re-inforced concrete surrounds both the primary and secondary containment of the tank providing the Park with maximum safety and environmental protection. The Core system design included B-50 compatible dispensing equipment, pumps, fittings, hoses, alarms and heating system for the tank. Most accessories and some piping were pre-installed at the factory, minimizing on-site expenses for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Core Engineered Solutions, Inc. provides environmentally compliant fuel storage and chemical storage systems that meet the highest safety standards. Core fuel storage systems featuring ConVault tanks are installed at over 300 parks in 29 states throughout the county. Fuel storage tanks and vehicle dispensing systems accommodate most forms of alternative fuels including Ethanol, E10, E85, Biodiesel, B10, B20, B50 and Methanol Blends.
